The Radiation Environment in Space:
An Introduction and its Impact on Space Exploration
Leaving the sheltered environment of the Earth's atmosphere and of our planet's magnetic field exposes robotic and space exploration missions to the challenges of surviving in a harsh radiation environment, caused by charged particles from the solar wind and high-energy cosmic rays. This workshop will provide an introduction on the topic, aimed at a broad academic and space industry audience, addressing the key aspects linked to radiation tolerance for space systems. Topics covered, include a description of the constraint – the space radiation environment – the failure mechanisms that such a constraint may trigger on electronics, materials, and humans – and finally the way to predict and mitigate the potential deleterious effects induced by radiation on intrinsically non-repairable systems. Specific examples will be presented, based on the several decades of experience Airbus Defence & Space have acquired through complex space exploration missions.
Keynote Speakers:
Renaud Mangeret (Airbus Defence & Space)
Dr. Mangeret received his PhD in electronics from the Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse (France) in the Materials and Components for Electronics Department in 1992. He then worked at the IBM Almaden Research Center, California, as a visiting scientist working on non-linear optics (NLO) polymers. From 1993-1995 Renaud worked at Giat Industries, Toulouse as a research and development engineer. Since 1995 Renaud has been a radiation specialist at Matra Marconi Space/EADS Astrium/Airbus Defence and Space, then in 2006 has been Astrium/Airbus Defence and Space’s Radiation Expert and is now Transnational Radiation Senior Expert, still at Airbus Defence and Space in Toulouse. He is responsible for all aspects of radiation hardness assurance solutions for the use of sensitive devices in space programs (telecommunications, Earth observation, interplanetary scientific and constellations) and in charge of Airbus Defence & Space's radiation processes. Renaud is a Member of the IEEE, chairman of the ESCC CTB Radiation Working Group and currently serves as Treasurer for the RADECS Association Steering Committee.
Indranil Chatterjee (Airbus Defence & Space)
Dr. Chatterjee (IEEE SM’19, M’14) received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA in 2014. From 2014 to 2016, he worked as a Postdoctoral Scientist in GaN power device development and reliability with the Centre for Device Thermography and Reliability at the University of Bristol, UK. In 2016, he joined the Defence and Space division of Airbus in Friedrichshafen, Germany as a Semiconductor Radiation Effects and Reliability Engineer where he is involved in R&D, design, radiation and reliability analysis of critical electronic systems for earth-observation, navigation, and, telecommunication satellites, and interplanetary probes. His research interests include Radiation Tolerance of Semiconductor Devices, Semiconductor Device Physics, Reliability, and Novel Devices. Presently, he is the Airbus expert on Discrete and Integrated Semiconductor Devices, responsible for transnational and trans-divisional activities in semiconductor technology, devices and roadmaps for future aerospace systems.
Dr. Chatterjee is a Senior Member of IEEE, and has authored and co-authored more than 50 papers in international journals and conferences and has delivered keynotes, and invited talks in US, Asia, Europe, and Australia.
